Safety Policy

We the Members of the Southern African Railways Association (SARA) are committed to finding safety solutions to the best advantage of our customers, employees, third parties, systems and relevant protocols of member countries.

The Safety Solutions shall deliver measurable results, be understood by employees, contractors and shall be customer as well as environmental friendly.

The Safety solutions shall address each railway administration’s general in-house safety and more specifically the area of operating interface between railways in the mutual spirit of finding solutions to identified problems and inefficiencies along the corridors.

SARA is committed to continuously improve safety performance through a Safety Management System (SMS) that addresses:

  • Safety plans and structures
  • Safety programmes
  • Safety training and education
  • Safety technical standards
  • Safety monitoring and auditing

In order to turn the SARA Safety Policy into practice it will be necessary for railway administrations to ensure that:

  • An internal Safety Management System that supports both internal and regional safety needs and initiatives is in place
  • Approved safety solutions are executed
  • Corridor Management Groups respond to and implement corridor Safety Solutions
  • Ensure that Corridor Management Groups are supported in their efforts to manage safety
