Dr Gideon Mahlalela
The Executive Director of Southern African Railways Association (SARA) graduated from the University of Zimbabwe with BSc (Hons) in Economics (1992), MSc in Economics (1994) and MBA (2005). He also holds a Diploma in Multimodal Transport Management he obtained from Belgium in 1998. He is a student member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).
Bernard joined the National Railways of Zimbabwe in October 1994 as a Trainee Planning Officer, rising through the ranks to the position of Chief Planning Manager. He left the National Railways of Zimbabwe to join SARA at the beginning of June 2006.

Vision
Bernard’s vision is to elevate regional railways to a higher level of performance where they effectively and efficiently contribute to the logistics chain, and collectively becoming the transport mode of first choice. Realisation of this vision will be through collaboration of the public and private sectors leading to harmonised institutional, commercial, technical and operational procedures and standards.
